“A group of countries belonging to the “collective West”, with the frank assistance of the UNESCO secretariat, which had lost its impartiality, swept through the politically motivated and not supported by the necessary expertise decision to include the nomination “Historical Center of the Port City of Odessa” into the List of World Heritage in Danger, — announced to the Foreign Ministry.
It is noted that the conclusion was prepared hastily, without observing the current high standards of UNESCO.
“Thus, Western countries have once again demonstrated not only their disregard for the rules of procedure of the World Heritage Committee, but also their willingness to sacrifice the once high prestige of UNESCO and its “flagship” Convention of 1972, which celebrated its half-century anniversary last year, to momentary geopolitical interests,” added to the ministry.
It is specified that the corresponding decision on Odessa was made by only six votes out of 21.
“The placement and use of military installations and weapons in the port area of Odessa deserves a separate condemnation from UNESCO.
However, for some reason they don’t remember this, ”the department stressed.
On January 25, UNESCO recognized the historical center of Odessa as an object of cultural heritage under threat.
On November 30, a decision was made in Odessa to dismantle the monuments to Catherine II and Suvorov.
