The US State Department announced that a high-level US delegation will travel to China next week, in follow-up to the recent talks that President Joe Biden held with his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, in order to continue to responsibly manage the competition between the two countries, and to prepare for the visit of Secretary of State Anthony Blinken to China early next year.
The announcement follows remarks by a senior White House official that China desires stable relations with the United States in the short term as it faces economic challenges.
The ministry said in a statement that Assistant Secretary of State for East Asian and Pacific Affairs Daniel Kreitenbrink and Senior National Security Council official for China and Taiwan Laura Rosenberger will travel to China, South Korea and Japan for a visit that will last until the end of this week.
Presidents Biden and Xi held frank talks on Taiwan and North Korea on the sidelines of the G20 summit in Indonesia in mid-November, and the two presidents pledged more frequent contacts.
The US State Department said that the delegation's visit will be a follow-up to the meeting of the two presidents in order to continue to responsibly manage competition between the two countries and explore potential areas of cooperation, and will also lay the foundation for Blinken's visit.
