Power outages in large areas in Moldova after the Russian bombing in Ukraine

Moldova is experiencing "widespread blackouts" on Wednesday following Russian strikes on Ukrainian energy facilities, Moldovan Deputy Prime Minister Andrej Spino said.

"As a result of the Russian bombing of the Ukrainian energy system during the past hour, we are witnessing major power outages throughout the country," Spino wrote on Facebook, while Moldova was already facing major energy problems for reasons related to the war in Ukraine.

He added that the country's national energy company, MoldElectrica, is working to restore power.

Foreign Minister Nico Popescu said that power outages hit the capital and even the Foreign Ministry building.

"I have instructed to summon the ambassador of Russia for an explanation," he added in an English-language tweet.

For her part, Maia Sandu, the president of Moldova who is close to the European Union, wrote on Facebook Wednesday after the latest round of Russian attacks, "Russia has left Moldova in the dark."
