In West African Mali, jihadists attacked a refugee camp and killed 11 people.

Attackers on motorcycles attacked the camp near the regional capital of Gao in the north of the Sahel, a local politician and Malian television reported on Wednesday.

A representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) confirmed the information.

According to an army officer, the attackers were acting in revenge for altercations they had with young inmates at the camp earlier in the year.

In March, the Islamic State (IS) jihadist militia launched an offensive in the Gao region and the neighboring Menaka region.

After that there were fierce battles between armed groups and also massacres of the civilian population.

Tens of thousands of people fled the violence.

Germany decided on Tuesday to end its military operation in the West African crisis country after ten years.

France has already withdrawn its troops, Great Britain wants to follow suit.

The aim of the European states was to stop the advance of the jihadists in Mali.

However, under the military junta ruling in Bamako, the operating conditions for the Europeans became increasingly difficult.
