A man was

killed and

16 others

were

hospitalized

after an

SUV drove

into an

Apple store

in a shopping mall in Hingham,

Massachusetts

.

This was announced by the US police.

"This was an unthinkable morning," Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz began at a press conference.

“The investigation is active and ongoing.

At this point, there's not much we can say."

Police began receiving 911 calls regarding a vehicle that ended up in a shop on Derby Street at around

10.45am

local time, the Hingham Police Chief said. David Jones.

Seven fire trucks and fourteen ambulances arrived at the scene, fire chief Steve Murphy said.

The 16 injured people were taken to the hospital, Cruz continued, adding that family members have not yet been notified.

"Employees who work in that store and nearby are visibly shaken" explained the county district attorney, specifying that "people are trying to overcome and process what happened".

Some people were “

crushed against the wall by the vehicle

” explained the fire chief, Murphy.

He was unable to provide any updates on the condition of the wounded.

When asked about the driver of the SUV, however, Cruz refused to provide further information.

To those who then asked him if the driver of the vehicle had intentionally crashed into the store, Cruz replied that there is an ongoing investigation and nothing can be said at this stage.

The man driving the vehicle was not taken to hospital and was taken into custody by officers.

As can be seen from the images shared on local media, there is a

large gash

in the window of the Apple store affected by the accident ;

around, stretchers, paramedical personnel, ambulances, a fire engine and a tow truck.

The emergency room at South Shore Hospital, the closest trauma center, is receiving injured patients,

spokeswoman Kristen Perfetuo told
