Arcom, the regulatory authority for the digital communication sector in France, expressed to Twitter its "deep concern" about the consequences of the restructuring of the company, since its takeover by Elon Musk, and its ability to honor its legal obligations, in particular regarding the fight against online hate.
In a letter dated November 18, Arcom expressed concern about "Twitter's ability to maintain a safe environment for users of its service."
She adds that she has asked the American company to confirm to her "by November 24 at the latest" that she is "able to meet the obligations imposed on her by law and to inform her of the short-term changes in human and technological resources devoted to compliance with these obligations".
In its letter, Arcom recalls, among other things, that Twitter must fight against the manipulation of information within the framework of the 2018 law, which obliges it to cooperate with the authorities by setting constraints on resources and transparency in the matter.
The social network is also subject "to all the obligations of means relating to the fight against the dissemination of hateful content online", she adds.
Since its takeover by Elon Musk for 44 billion dollars (about 43.1 billion euros), Twitter has laid off more than half of its 7,500 employees and greatly reduced the number of its subcontractors.
The general manager of the French subsidiary, Damien Viel, himself announced his departure in a tweet on Sunday.
