Kazakhstani voters went to the polls on Sunday to elect a new president for the country.

Seven candidates are competing in these early elections, including current President Kasim-Jomart Tokayev.

Polling stations opened their doors at seven in the morning local time, with more than 10,000 boxes across the country, to close at eight in the evening today.

According to official data, the number of voters in the country is 11,950,485 out of a total population of more than 19 million.

These early elections come after a constitutional referendum last June following protests over the increase in gas prices, which resulted in casualties and riots.

According to the new constitutional amendments, the president is elected for a single presidential term of 7 years that cannot be extended, thus preventing the risk of monopoly in the state system in the future.

The elections are being observed by 642 foreign observers, including representatives of the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, the Organization of Turkic States, the Parliamentary Assembly of Turkic Speaking Countries, the Shanghai Cooperation Organization, and the heads of the supreme electoral bodies in 15 countries.

The preliminary results of the elections are scheduled to be announced tomorrow, Monday at the latest, and the final results will be announced no later than November 27.
