Today, Wednesday, the World Health Organization reported that the number of deaths from infection with Covid-19 disease has decreased sharply since last winter.

The Director of the World Health Organization, Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said that about 9,400 deaths linked to Covid-19 were recorded globally last week.

This represents a decrease of about 90% from deaths last February, which saw the peak of deaths due to COVID-19 this year at 75,000.

Tedros explained that while this is a positive development, many people are still dying as well.

He added that "about 10,000 deaths a week is a very large number, for a disease that can be prevented and treated."

"Covid-19 is still a pandemic," WHO epidemiologist Maria Van Kerkhove noted.

About 2.1 million new infections were recorded globally last week.

On the other hand, aggregate data showed that the total number of confirmed cases of coronavirus worldwide has exceeded 632.9 million to date.

The latest data available on the Johns Hopkins University website showed that the total number of injuries reached 633 million and 364 thousand.

The total deaths due to the pandemic rose to 6 million 602 thousand and 887 deaths.
