A rocket from the Gaza Strip was fired into Israeli territory on Thursday evening, before being intercepted by the anti-missile system, the Israeli army said in a statement.

This shooting, the first since the hostilities that pitted the Israeli army in August against Islamic Jihad in the Gaza Strip, comes shortly after the announcement of the results of the legislative elections in Israel that gave victory to former Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Rise of violence

This rocket fire from the Palestinian enclave, controlled by Hamas and subjected for 15 years to a strict Israeli blockade, was not claimed and caused neither damage nor injury.

The army later claimed that three more rockets were fired from the Gaza Strip on Thursday evening without reaching Israeli territory.

The shootings come amid an upsurge in violence linked to the Israeli-Palestinian conflict in the occupied West Bank, where a commander of the armed wing of Islamic Jihad was killed Thursday by the Israeli army.
