"I think Trump will run the 2024 election without hesitation," Trump advisers said.

"He probably wanted to announce before Thanksgiving, which would give him an advantage over his opponent, and he understood that."

Announcing the decision in the coming weeks could also put other party contenders off the table, advisers said, though they added that Trump could still delay a decision or change his mind.

Trump intends to announce his candidacy for president shortly after the Nov. 8 midterm elections and has been calling on potential staffers to join the effort, according to another source familiar with the plans.

Republicans have a good chance of winning a majority in the House of Representatives in midterm elections and a chance to take control of the Senate, which would allow them to block President Biden's legislative agenda for the next two years, according to nonpartisan election forecasters and polls.

Voter concerns about high inflation have kept support for Biden below 50 percent for more than a year, and as low as 40 percent recently.

According to a poll by Quinnipiac University, more than half of Americans do not want incumbent Biden and former President Trump to run for president in 2024.
