The Ministry of Defense has compiled an estimate that it will require about 48 trillion yen in expenses over the five years starting next fiscal year for the drastic strengthening of defense capabilities.
In order to drastically strengthen defense capabilities, the government is proceeding with discussions aiming to revise three security-related documents such as the "National Security Strategy" by the end of the year, and to increase defense spending.
At the same time, the Ministry of Defense has been accumulating expenses to be included in the "mid-term defense" and "mid-term defense buildup plan," which determine the total defense budget for the next five years.
And we have compiled an estimate that a total of about 48 trillion yen is required.
The current Medium-Term Defense Plan sets the level of defense build-up over the five years from FY2019 at a total of approximately 27.47 trillion yen, which is approximately 1.7 times this amount.
On the other hand, the Ministry of Finance has stated that it is necessary to secure stable financial resources in order to increase defense spending, and the focus will be on the scale of defense spending in the future.
