British Prime Minister decides to attend COP27

British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak on Wednesday finally decided to attend the COP27 Climate Conference, hosted by Egypt, after he announced his non-participation due to internal commitments.

"There is no long-term prosperity without action on climate change. There is no energy security without investing in renewables. That's why I'm bringing COP27 next week: so that the legacy of Glasgow is translated into a secure and sustainable future," the 42-year-old Conservative leader said in a tweet.

Sunak reversed his decision the day after former Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced that he would attend the climate summit.

Sunak had initially announced that he would not go and attributed his absence to "urgent commitments" related to the preparation of a budget presentation on November 17, which has become a subject of intense anticipation after several weeks of financial fluctuations in the United Kingdom.

After mounting criticism, including from Britain's former COP26 chief Alok Sharma, the prime minister's spokesman said Tuesday that his presence at COP27 was "under consideration", suggesting Downing Street was paving the way for a reversal of the decision.
