Iraqi security and medical sources said today, Saturday, that 10 people were killed and more than 20 wounded in an explosion that took place in the Al-Bunuk neighborhood, east of Baghdad.

Eyewitnesses said that the sound of the explosion - which occurred in an open garage near a football stadium in a residential neighborhood - was heard in separate areas east of Baghdad, and that ambulances and police forces rushed to the scene.

The official security media cell confirmed that most of the victims were football players who were in the stadium, and that it had taken the necessary measures to find out the causes of the explosion.

Reuters quoted (unnamed) sources as saying that the explosion occurred near a football stadium and a cafe, when an explosive device attached to a car exploded in the area, which led to another explosion of a gas truck that was nearby.

The Islamic State is still active in some northern and eastern provinces, at a time when the Baghdad government is struggling to contain the organization's attacks by launching security and military operations in the north, west and east of the country.

Since the beginning of this year, the Iraqi forces have intensified combing and raiding operations to pursue the remnants of the organization, which was defeated in 2017 by losing a third of the country's area it had invaded in the summer of 2014.
