In recent days, the country's security forces have cracked down heavily on mourners who have gathered to honor some of those killed during the wave of protests in Iran, including Mahsa Amini, Nika Shakarami and Ismail Mauludi.

According to the human rights organization Iran Human Rights, at least 140 people have been killed since the protests began in September, after 22-year-old Mahsa Amini died in the custody of the hard-line Iranian morality police.

According to the police, Amini suffered a heart attack - something disputed by the 22-year-old's family, who claim that she was subjected to severe violence to the head.

More than 90 people were killed in a separate incident in the southeastern city of Zahedan in late September, when people gathered in protests following reports that a police officer raped a teenage girl.

On Friday, the state-run Iranian news agency Irna reported that the city's police chief and another police chief had been fired over negligence and "innocent civilian deaths" in Zahedan.
