The previous proposal for new Natura 2000 areas, which included coastal meadows along the coast in Kalmar county, was met with criticism from many quarters.

- Municipalities felt that the plans prevented future expansion plans, landowners were not satisfied, and above all, farmers were very critical of that proposal.

Farmers felt that it creates uncertainty for future generations of agriculture, says Governor Peter Sandwall.

During Friday, the County Administrative Board in Kalmar County therefore presented a new proposal for new Natura 2000 areas.

And in that proposal, the County Administrative Board in Kalmar has moved the protected area from the beaches to 100 meters out into the water.

But how good a protection does the new proposal provide?

- This is of course a compromise, but as we see it, the proposal provides good protection against the birds that are found along the coasts, but this proposal also provides conditions for viable agriculture, says Peter Sandwall.

Now it will be the government that will make the final decision on the question of what the new Natura 2000 areas in Kalmar County should look like.
