"We have just concluded the negotiations on emission levels for cars," writes the chairman of the environmental committee, Pascal Canfin, on Twitter.

"Historic EU decision for the climate that confirms the goals of 100 percent emission-free vehicles by 2035," he continues.

A spokesperson for the Czech Presidency also tweets that an agreement is in place.

The announcement means that they have now agreed on the first proposal in the European Commission's large "fit for 55" package that was presented last summer and which aims to reduce emissions in 2030 by 55 percent compared to 1990.
