According to the government, the proposal for the introduction of visitation zones, i.e. areas where police can search people without them being suspected of crime, should make it easier for the police to get access to weapons and drugs.

Critics believe that it can undermine the police's trust-building work and appear suspicious.

The police union says it fears the measure could be counterproductive.

Increase security

According to Minister of Justice Gunnar Strömmer (M), the introduction of visitation zones is based on a balance between different interests.

- You want to use it to increase legal security for people who otherwise experience a great deal of insecurity, that is the motive and the reason for the move.

Strömmer says that they are aware of the risks the proposal entails in terms of personal integrity and trust in the system, but that he feels strong faith in the police.

- I am convinced that they can use even very far-reaching tools in such a way that we can protect integrity and continue to build trust.
