The city of Damazin in the Blue Nile region of southern Sudan witnessed on Sunday clashes between crowds of demonstrators and the army and police forces.

A military source in the Blue Nile region told Al Jazeera that thousands of demonstrators from the "Alberta" component stormed the army headquarters in the city of Damazin, injuring members of the Rapid Support Forces.

He added that army and police forces dispersed the protesters using tear gas.

The military source stated that a "loot group" of demonstrators looted weapons from a warehouse belonging to the Air Defense Forces during the confrontations, pointing to shooting in some neighborhoods of the city of Damazin from unknown sides.

Local sources told Al Jazeera that protesters set fire to the headquarters of the Government Secretariat in the city of Damazin.

The state's Minister of Health, Jamal Nasser, said that hospitals are facing a significant shortage of medicines in light of the increase in the number of injured.

And at the end of last week, about 200 people were killed in 3 villages during clashes that took place between the Hausa and Funj tribes in the state, and the local council in the Wad Al-Mahi area said that some of the bodies had not yet been buried.

On Friday, the governor of the state announced the imposition of a state of emergency and giving the security forces full powers to stop the tribal fighting, while the protesters are calling for the dismissal of the governor who took office in accordance with the Juba Agreement in 2020, and the removal of the Rapid Support Forces from the state.

Raising the soul of a martyr

A little while ago, the soul of a martyr whose data has not yet been confirmed,

died after being shot in the chest by the coup forces after participating in today's demonstration in Khartoum.

The martyr has mercy, forgiveness and eternity in the highest paradise of heaven.

Khartoum demonstrations

On the other hand, Sudan's Central Doctors Committee, which is allied with the protest movement, said that a protester was killed in the capital, Khartoum, "after being shot in the chest" by security forces during his participation in Sunday's demonstration.

The committee added that this brings the total number of protesters killed since the "military coup" in October 2021 to 118, and that this death is the first since August 31.

These protests come two days before the first anniversary of the army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan's ouster of his civilian partners from the transitional government following the fall of former President Omar al-Bashir in 2019, amid calls to demonstrate against the authority and demand civilian rule.
