Haiti was once again at the heart of a meeting of the UN Security Council.

The fifteen members adopted sanctions targeting the criminal gangs responsible for the security and humanitarian crisis.

A text initiated by the United States and Mexico.

But for the moment, no progress on the question of an international force on the spot.

The resolution was passed unanimously and the fifteen members of the Security Council all welcomed the adoption of these sanctions, reports our correspondent in New York,

Loubna Anaki

.

A series of measures which target the gangs responsible for the current chaos in Haiti, in particular Jimmy Cherizier, leader of the G9 alliance, which has been blocking the port of Varreux for several weeks.

The adopted text notably provides for travel bans, an asset freeze and an arms embargo.

This resolution is a first response to calls for help from the Haitian people

," said the US ambassador to the UN, adding that this is a clear message addressed to the gangs whose actions are in largely responsible for the security and humanitarian crisis on the island.

But if the members of the Security Council welcomed this resolution, these sanctions are likely to be difficult to apply, in reality, while we are still awaiting a possible vote on another resolution, that relating to the sending of an international force.

The American ambassador clarified that discussions are continuing on this subject.

But we know that some members, notably Russia and China, have expressed reservations on this issue.

Visiting Washington, French Foreign Minister Catherine Colonna discussed the situation in Haiti.

We support the search for stability for Haiti, a country that has once again descended into violence and has not emerged from poverty.

And who is now in a situation of serious insecurity with, as we see, a takeover by criminal gangs which only worsens his situation.

So I would like to welcome the adoption of the resolution in the Security Council.

If an international police support force were to be created, France would contribute to it.
