Biden 'concerned' about Ukraine aid if Republicans win congressional majority

US President Joe Biden expressed concern Thursday about the future of US aid to Ukraine in the event that Republicans gain control of one or both houses of Congress in the midterm elections scheduled for November 8.

"I'm worried," Biden told reporters while stopping at a sandwich shop in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, when asked about the impact on aid to Ukraine if Republicans win.

Biden is visiting Pittsburgh as part of a campaign trail for Democrat John Fetterman, whose US Senate rival with Republican Mehmet Oz will help determine whether Democrats will retain control of the Senate.

House Republican leader Kevin McCarthy said in recent days he would not be "willing to write a blank check" to help Ukraine if Republicans took over the House from Democrats in the midterm elections.

Republicans are divided between those who see a need to rein in Russia and those who favor a more isolationist foreign policy.

The United States has provided more than $17.5 billion in U.S. security assistance to Ukraine since the war began on February 24.
