A

constituent congress

, to be carried out with a “hard and uncompromising” parliamentary opposition work, and

to be concluded by winter or early spring

.

Translated, "in mid-March".

With this proposal, Enrico Letta closes the long leadership of the Democratic Party in the Nazarene, marked by the final vote on the report of the outgoing secretary: a full approval, which records only one vote against (Monica Cirinnà) and two abstentions.

The

congress will therefore take place in four phases

: open well beyond the Democratic Party, with moments of in-depth analysis on the main issues to be resolved;

and will end with the

primary

at the end of winter.

Shortly thereafter, the candidate of "democratic and progressive Italy" will convene a new direction to set the times for each stage.

It is the start of a path that should lead, at least in intentions, to a

profound change in the party

and its leadership group.

Not therefore a new symbol, a new, completely different project, but a "re-foundation".

After all, Letta on the symbol had been clear: “I'm in love with it”.

The very long meeting (more than

eighty speeches for over ten hours

), at times agitated and in which there was no lack of criticism and attacks on the management team, therefore seems to find the right balance on how to move and act in the coming months, while the new legislature is starts and the next government (the first in Italy led by a woman) is preparing to take its first steps.

And it is precisely on

the female question

that one of the strongest clashes takes place, with President

Valentina Cuppi

(one of the many non-elected) to speak explicitly of "

machismo

”Within the management team.

The secretary collects and raises: that of gender representation in the party is a central theme.

For this reason, the resigning secretary proposes, that the next group leaders in the Senate and in the Chamber should also be women, as he had already decided in the legislature just ended.

A proposal that does not please one of the veterans, Luigi Zanda, for whom the parliamentary groups must decide.

Handle

The president of the Democratic Party Valentina Cuppi

The Letta line is therefore armored until the inauguration of the new Parliament: probably, the two presidents of the groups, Malpezzi and Seracchiani, will be extended at least until the election of the new secretariat.

Now

it is time to oppose

, remembers the secretary dem, who calls the party to mobilize: “Let's take off the double-breasted, let's immediately put on the clothes of the opposition, let's immediately change mentality.

To be opposition

we must be institutional, proactive, but be opposition.

The opposition will do us good, it will allow us to regenerate and rethink our future in connection with our country ”.

Handle

Debora Serracchiani

To do this it is necessary "a

new management team

, made up of new generations", resources "that the Democratic Party has".

But Letta warns: this does not mean “beauty contests but a path that allows us to face the problems we have before us in depth.

The comparison between candidates will do the party good ”.

In reiterating these points, the leader does not embrace the most catastrophic visions, for which the defeat was profound, dramatic, irrecoverable and that everything must be thrown away, “the baby and the bathwater”.

The party is alive, Letta seems to be saying, it only needs to be reconstituted and reprogrammed.

"I think it was a success to give birth to the Democratic Party, it was and will be a positive story for the country" clarifies the secretary.

And he removes a few pebbles from his shoes: "We are

the only ones who have held elections as an alternative to the right, all the others have held elections as an alternative to us

".

To weigh on the defeat, the nuanced dream of the 'wide field', which made it impossible to present himself at the electoral appointment within a wide alliance.

"A field won because it was united, our field, on the other hand, was not, despite the work of months and years to build a wide field, a large unit, the only condition with which it could have been won".

But the Democratic Party, Letta recalls, is still the "

leading party of the opposition, the second party in Italy and the first among those who are not part of the majority"

.

This justifies and motivates the work that must be started now, in view of the next pages to be written.

In a nutshell,

start talking to "those segments of the population that can't make

it, not just those that make it".

And, dreaming of his uncompromising opposition against “a government that is already showing its difficulties now.

And he has not yet been born ”, Letta predicts (or perhaps hopes):“ The government's honeymoon with the country will be short: the social situation has greatly deteriorated by the war and the economic crisis ”.

So on with the next steps, the re-foundation, the work in progress: there is life in the Democratic Party.
