Power cuts paralyze eastern Canada after Storm Fiona

More than a third of the population of Nova Scotia lived without electricity on Monday, two days after powerful storm Fiona hit Canada's east coast, sweeping homes into the sea and killing one person.

Fiona was one of the worst storms to hit Canada, and officials said it could take months to repair the entire infrastructure.

Canadian authorities sent the military to Nova Scotia to help with rescue efforts and clear debris, and provided federal aid to other provinces affected by the storm, including Newfoundland and Labrador and Prince Edward Island.

Footage posted on social networking sites showed that the power outage caused long queues to refuel, and many public schools and government offices were forced on Monday to close.
