The epicenter was located 71 kilometers south of Coalcomán, Michoacan. , the focal depth was 16 kilometers, close to the location of the strong earthquake the previous day, and was identified as an aftershock.

As of 7:00 a.m. local time on September 20, since a magnitude 7.7 earthquake occurred in western Mexico at 13:05 on the previous day, 692 aftershocks have been recorded, of which the strongest aftershock was a magnitude of 5.8.
