A magnetizer from Charente-Maritime, accused of rape and sexual assault by 16 women, was sentenced Monday to 15 years in prison by the Dordogne Assize Court.

This sentence is accompanied by a 10-year socio-judicial follow-up, the lawyer for one of the victims told AFP.

Joël Merland, 76, was found guilty of all the charges against him: rape, attempted rape and/or sexual assault on 16 women.

A former retired truck driver, the septuagenarian had become a volunteer magnetizer at his home in Tonnay-Boutonne, near Rochefort.

Ten to twelve years were required

It was in his dining room, where the sessions took place, that he committed between 2012 and 2020 the acts for which he was convicted, taking advantage of his activity to abuse his patients.

Among the complainants, a magistrate from the city of Saintes, in Charente-Maritime.

His complaint had led to the change of scenery of the case in Périgueux, where all the debates were held behind closed doors for a week.

The Advocate General had requested a sentence of 10 to 12 years in prison on Monday.
