Prosecutors in Baltimore, the largest city in the US state of Maryland, demanded the annulment of the life sentence imposed on American citizen Adnan Sayed, and a new trial for him after evidence of his innocence emerged.

According to the American Wall Street Journal, Adnan Sayed is serving a life sentence after being convicted in 2000 - when he was only 17 years old - of strangling his girlfriend (Hae Min Lee), as he was charged and tried on the grounds that he adult person.

Adnan has maintained his innocence, and the Court of Appeals ruled in 2018 his right in a new trial, but the decision was later overturned in the highest court in Maryland.

And the Wall Street Journal reported that prosecutors contacted - last March - the Baltimore Sentencing Review Unit, explaining that new evidence had emerged that required this.

The newspaper said that prosecutors spoke of two suspects who may have been involved in the crime, who were known to investigators during the first investigation, but were not properly excluded.

The newspaper confirmed that the prosecutors found, during the re-investigation, a document in the trial file detailing the statements of one of the two suspects who had a motive to kill the victim, and had previously threatened to kill her in the presence of another person.

The new investigation revealed that the victim's car, Hai Lee, was found in an area near the home of one of the suspects' relatives, and prosecutors said that information was not available to the defendant during his trial in 2000.

The American newspaper said that among the information disclosed, one of the suspects was involved in attacking a woman he did not know while she was in her car, and one of the suspects was previously charged and later convicted of rape and sexual assault.

The story of Adnan Sayed has been causing great controversy in the United States since 2014, specifically, after the famous podcast "Serial" dealt with his case, as several questions were raised about the trial and the basis for his conviction.

Hye Min Lee, a US citizen (originally from South Korea), was 18 at the time of her murder.
