One person was killed and 6 others injured in the collapse of a 4-storey building in Amman

One person was killed and six others were injured when a four-storey building collapsed in Amman, the Jordanian authorities announced Tuesday.

"Specialized rescue teams were able to evacuate a death from under the rubble and six injured people, after the collapse of an inhabited apartment building in the Al-Weibdeh area in the capital, Amman, on Tuesday," Amer Al-Sartawi, spokesman for the Public Security Directorate, told AFP.

"Rescue teams are still dealing with the accident and are working to evacuate the injured," he added.

For its part, a source in the Civil Defense Directorate confirmed that "there are a number of people trapped in the collapsed building."

According to an AFP correspondent, Prime Minister Bishr Al-Khasawneh and the Ministers of Interior, Health and State for Media Affairs visited the scene of the accident to supervise rescue and evacuation operations.

"The Prime Minister instructed the mayor of the capital and officials to search for the reasons that led to the collapse of this building," Minister of State for Information Affairs and government spokesman Faisal al-Shboul told reporters at the scene.

The Jabal Al-Weibdeh area is considered one of the most beautiful, oldest and most ancient areas of Amman. Its construction dates back to the beginning of the twentieth century, and many foreigners reside there, and it includes the headquarters of the French Cultural Center.
