Madrassa, an open digital educational platform, won the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) International Literacy Prize, for the first time in the UAE, and the first for this year in the Arab world, for its efforts in providing educational and knowledge content in Arabic digitally and making it free for all.

He announced the culmination of the "Madrasa" platform, which is one of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum's global initiatives to spread education and knowledge, as part of the annual awards ceremony held by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization in Abidjan, Cote d'Ivoire, on the occasion of International Literacy Day.

This is the first win for the UAE in general with this award and the only Arab one in this year's session, along with prominent winning countries: Britain and India in the category of support for mother tongue literacy, and Brazil, South Africa and Malaysia in the category of support for literacy for adults in rural areas.

The Secretary-General of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives, Mohammed bin Abdullah Al Gergawi, said, "Providing learning opportunities for all in accordance with the vision of Mohammed bin Rashid is a fruitful Emirati model that empowers future generations and contributes to spreading the values ​​of continuous learning and openness to cultures, knowledge and ideas that build civilizations. It accelerates the achievement of the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals, and the resumption of the contribution of the region and its rising generations to the march of human civilization.”

He stressed that the design, launch and expansion of innovative and sustainable humanitarian work initiatives, especially in the education and knowledge dissemination sector, is a continuous approach for the UAE and its charitable, humanitarian and community institutions, with the support of its leadership and with a wide contribution from its community and its international partners from United Nations organizations and other institutions around the world keen to enhance the future of humanitarian work possible for human societies.

The achievement of "Madrasa", which provides free educational content in Arabic to more than 60 million Arab students, the UNESCO Prize supports the goals of the "Emirates Declaration of the Arabic Language", which was witnessed by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, His signature in December 2021 by the Arab Ministers of Culture during the Arab Language Summit at the "Expo Dubai".

The Minister of Culture and Youth, Noura bint Mohammed Al Kaabi, praised the "Madrasa" platform for winning the award, considering it a comprehensive honor for the various programs, initiatives and knowledge and cultural projects aimed at the UAE towards the region and the world.

The UNESCO Literacy Prize is the third international award for the Madrassa platform that it has won in a few years after its launch, as it won the Sharjah Prize for the Distinguished Educational Project and the ESCWA Prize for Arabic Digital Content for Sustainable Development for the current year.

The State's Permanent Representative to UNESCO, Salem Khalid Abdullah Al Qasimi, said that "the state has made great efforts in the field of illiteracy eradication, and is committed to supporting and implementing initiatives aimed at developing educational tools, methods and platforms that anyone who wants to learn can access and benefit from."

The platform team worked on developing its open content, consisting of thousands of video lessons, in cooperation with the best experts and educators.

The platform provides students from kindergarten to secondary school an integrated study plan for the most important topics of the Arabic language, in a simplified manner, that complements the educational curricula and uses technology applications and visual, interactive and digital media.

The lessons focus on four main features: employing innovative and attractive means in teaching the Arabic language, adopting a smooth language and a modern method of presentation that suits the modern generation and according to their ages, providing certified and high-quality content according to the highest standards and with the participation of a selection of educators and experts, and providing more than 1,000 video lessons. It covers the different levels of study in the Arabic language.

The advisor in the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives and the general coordinator of the platform, Dr. Waleed Al Ali, stressed that it is the largest initiative of its kind in the region that provides electronic educational content in Arabic, as a mother tongue, and supports digital content by providing it free for all;

In order to implement the vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, in spreading education, supporting the Arabic language, and adopting digital solutions and innovation.

He said: "We are proud that the Madrasah platform, run by the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Global Initiatives, won the UNESCO-King Chejong Literacy Prize, after it recorded 75 million views of its educational lessons, available for free in Arabic on its website, and won three million subscribers from 55 countries."

The UNESCO-King Chejong Literacy Prize is an annual prize for more than three decades. It is affiliated with UNESCO. It is awarded to the most prominent institutions, organizations or individuals for their contribution to the fight against illiteracy.
