Ethiopia begins operation of a second turbine on the Renaissance Dam

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed on Thursday gave the green light to operate a second turbine out of 13 scheduled for the Grand Renaissance Dam that Ethiopia built on the Blue Nile, while the third filling process continues despite protests from Sudan and Egypt.

Abiy Ahmed again sought to reassure Khartoum and Cairo, saying that the only goal of the Grand Renaissance Dam is "to develop our economy through the production of electricity" and "does not aim to marginalize and harm them."

"The current third filling process confirms that the works carried out to collect 22 billion cubic meters of water and generate electricity through two turbines do not lead to a water shortage in the downstream countries," he said.
