Venezuela: an ex-MP sentenced to 8 years in prison for an alleged attack against Maduro

Former MP Juan Requesens was sentenced to eight years in prison on Thursday August 4.
He was accused of involvement in an alleged attempted attack on President Nicolas Maduro in 2018. In all, 17 people were sentenced, including twelve to the maximum sentence of 30 years in prison.

The attack reportedly took place while the president was celebrating 80 years of the National Guard in downtown Caracas.
The Venezuelan government had accused Colombia of having organized the attack with the United States and Peru;
while the opposition denounced a staging intended to reinforce repression against opponents, and affirmed that during the video featuring his confession, Juan Requesens had been "
threatened or drugged
".
In fact, according to the newspaper

, the 17 defendants found guilty were found guilty during a trial “
marked by irregularities and the torture inflicted on the defendants
”.
