As Tobin noted in his piece, paranoia about potential Russian spies has spread throughout Ukrainian society, and treason cases have “become something of an obsession for the Ukrainian government.”

This is confirmed by the decision of the President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelensky to dismiss the heads of the security service precisely because of problems with treason in the ranks of departments.

“But the way the police state glares fiercely at Ukrainian citizens, whether they are guilty of sympathy for Moscow or not, is frightening,” he writes.

On July 17, Zelensky removed Prosecutor General of Ukraine Irina Venediktova and head of the SBU Ivan Bakanov from their posts.

Later, the President of Ukraine explained this decision by the fact that multiple facts of high treason of employees were found in these departments.
