Indian health authorities have confirmed that a person infected with monkeypox has died for the first time in the country, and the government is strengthening vigilance, such as setting up a countermeasure team.

It is believed to be the first confirmed death in Asia.

A 22-year-old Indian man infected with monkeypox in the southern state of Kerala has died, health officials said Thursday.



According to local media, this man returned to Japan on July 22 after being confirmed to be infected with monkeypox in the UAE = United Arab Emirates, where he was staying, and was being treated at a hospital. Health officials are investigating the exact cause of death.



In India, four people have been confirmed to have been infected with monkeypox so far in the southern state of Kerala and the capital New Delhi, but this is the first case of death.



On the 1st, the Indian government has strengthened its vigilance, such as setting up a team of experts to monitor the infection status.



Regarding monkeypox, as of July 29, the CDC = American Center for Disease Control and Prevention has confirmed that 22,485 people have been infected in 79 countries and regions around the world.



So far, deaths have been reported in Spain and Brazil, but it is believed to be the first confirmed case in Asia.
