In a video message sent to the Petersberg climate summit in Berlin, Germany, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said, "It is in our hands whether we will respond jointly to the climate crisis or choose mass suicide."

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz also said in a speech that "the world must not revive fossil fuels, especially coal power," and "we must move away from coal, oil and gas."

This meeting was held to prepare for the annual UN Climate Change Convention of the Parties, and climate change-related ministers from 40 countries around the world attended.
