The UAE participates in the work of the 74th session of the Committee against Torture in Geneva

The UAE delegation will participate in the 74th session of the United Nations Committee against Torture, held in Geneva, from 12 to 29 July 2022, within the framework of the Committee’s review of a number of periodic reports of states party to the Convention against Torture, including the first report it reviews UAE regarding the implementation of the provisions of the agreement.

In this context, the Director of the International Cooperation Department at the Ministry of Justice, Head of the State’s co-delegation, Judge Abdul Rahman Murad Al Balushi, confirmed that in light of the UAE’s ratification of the Convention in 2012, the review of the first report comes as a procedure followed in accordance with Article 19 of the Convention, which invites the states parties to it. to submit reports on the measures it has taken in implementing its obligations under this Convention.

He added: "Since its establishment in 1971, the UAE has devoted its efforts towards strengthening its legislative and legal system and developing its institutional structure in a way that contributes to the promotion and protection of human rights, and it has included this in its constitution and national legislation that guarantees the safety of every individual and guarantees equality and social justice."

In its statement to the committee, the UAE will review the contents of the first report of the efforts made by the state in the framework of the implementation of the agreement, and the developments that have occurred since its delivery of the report, which includes the relevant national legislation recently issued, in line with regional and international standards and agreements, in addition to reviewing the latest developments. The role of government agencies, relevant official bodies, national human rights mechanisms, associations and institutions of public interest in implementing the provisions of the Convention.

It should be noted that the Committee against Torture was established under Article 17 of the Convention. The Committee is composed of ten high-level experts, and is responsible for reviewing periodic reports submitted by Member States on a regular basis every four years.
