Amazon said it will now reimburse its employees for travel expenses for certain medical procedures in the United States.

The decision includes abortions, to which access is increasingly restricted in some states.

The group confirmed the information on Monday without specifying the reasons for this change in its health coverage.

The e-commerce giant, which employs nearly a million people in the United States, will reimburse up to $ 4,000 in costs for treatments inaccessible within a radius of 160 km around the accommodation.

Companies take a stand

The new measure also includes, among others, oncology, obesity treatments, birth defects, mental health care and addiction services.

At the same time, Amazon has backtracked in its handling of Covid-19.

Sick employees will be able to take five unpaid days off or paid sick days.

Since the fall of 2021, many American companies have shown their support for women's right to abortion.

Citigroup indicated last March that its employees would be reimbursed in the event of a trip for an abortion, specifying that it was a response to new legislation in certain States.

Increasingly restricted access to abortion

On September 1, 2021, one of the most restrictive anti-abortion laws came into effect in Texas, prohibiting all abortions as soon as a fetal heartbeat is perceptible on ultrasound, approximately four weeks after fertilization.

Since then, several texts limiting access to abortion have been passed in other states such as Oklahoma, Florida, or Mississippi.

The legality of the text passed in Mississippi is currently under review by the Supreme Court.

The decision is expected in June.

The conservative judges of the state, now with an ultra-majority, have suggested that they could reduce or even cancel the right to abortion, which is now valid as long as the fetus is not viable, i.e. towards the end of the second trimester.
