• In Hauts-de-France, voters placed Marine Le Pen at the head of the second round of the presidential election.

  • It is only in the North that the outgoing president has accumulated more votes than his rival.

  • Nevertheless, including in the Lille metropolis, the RN wins votes in each presidential election.

Despite her defeat on Sunday, at the end of the second round of the presidential election, Marine Le Pen (RN) consoled herself by claiming scores at the highest.

This is even more true in Hauts-de-France, where the National Rally garnered an unprecedented number of votes in a presidential election.

If the North is the only department in the region to still resist against the RN, the party of Marine Le Pen is nevertheless gaining ground, including in the European metropolis of Lille (MEL).

This 2022 presidential election will have seen the Hauts-de-France region fall into the fold of the National Rally in number of votes, since 1.5 million inhabitants voted for Marine Le Pen against 1.38 million for Emmanuel Macron.

This is quite logical since the RN continues, from ballot to ballot, to win voters in the region.

At the level of the departments, four out of five have now changed tack, the latest being the Oise and the Somme.

The RN grabs where Emmanuel Macron loses

The North, and its 1.8 million registered voters, still keeps its distance from the party of Marine Le Pen.

Distances which, however, continue to shrink.

Indeed, if the RN still arrives behind the outgoing president, he wins votes: nearly 60,000 between the second round of 2017 and that of Sunday while Emmanuel Macron, he lost more than 36,000.

On the scale of the MEL, the finding of a rise in power of the National Rally is less obvious, in particular because of the large number of municipalities that make it up.

Out of 95 municipalities, only six placed Marine Le Pen in the lead in the second round, four of which are on the borders of Nord and Pas-de-Calais.

However, from presidential to presidential, the RN grabs votes, including in the big cities.

In Lille, Marine Le Pen won 23.44% on Sunday against 21.77% in 2017, or 1,361 votes won in five years.

The trend is the same in Roubaix or Tourcoing.

The municipality which will perhaps be the last to place Marine Le Pen at the head of an election is Gruson.

With 1,143 inhabitants, including 1,052 registered on the electoral lists, Emmanuel Macron collected 80.5% of the votes in the second round, his best score in the MEL.

A membership vote obviously, the outgoing president having already come out ahead in the first round, with 49.6% of the votes cast, far ahead of Marine Le Pen (12.46%).
