US military official confirms: Ukraine's air defense forces are "effective"

A senior US military official revealed on Friday that Ukraine's air defenses are standing firm as the country grapples with a Russian invasion.

"They have about 56 combat aircraft left on the ground, and this is the majority of their fleet," the official told reporters, on condition of anonymity.

He explained that the Ukrainian air force performs about five to 10 sorties per day, while the Russian aviation flies more than 200 sorties per day, noting that the Ukrainian side is focusing more on defending itself from the ground.

The official described Ukraine's strategy as "effective" and "creative."

The US government recently rejected a proposal by Poland to deliver MiG-29 fighters to Ukraine via a US base in Germany.

Washington has said that delivering such fighters during the conflict would be too risky and questioned the efficacy of such a move.

"We do not object to any other country that might want to send planes to Ukraine. This is a sovereign decision that another country can make," the US official added.
