The atomic threat of the master of the Kremlin does not pass.

The United States on Wednesday denounced Vladimir Putin's "provocative rhetoric" about nuclear weapons.

At the same time, the Americans announced, for the sake of "responsibility", the postponement of a test firing of ballistic missiles scheduled for this week.

This decision aims to "demonstrate" that Washington "does not intend to engage in an action that could be misinterpreted".

Vladimir Putin's announcement last week that Russia's nuclear forces, which have the largest number of nuclear warheads, were placed on "special alert" was "the height of irresponsibility", said US Foreign Minister Antony Blinken.

Such rhetoric "is dangerous, adds to the risk of confusion and must be avoided", underlined the Secretary of State.

The Pentagon also deemed “unacceptable” the Russian announcement as well as the “possible changes in the nuclear position which involve the most fundamental weapons in our respective arsenals”.

The United States wants to position itself as a “responsible nuclear power”.
