After his surrender after three weeks on the run across France, police officer Arnaud B. was indicted on Thursday for "murder by spouse" and imprisoned at Health, suspected of having fatally strangled his partner Amanda Glain at the end of January in Paris.

This peacekeeper born in May 1992 had called the gendarmerie on Tuesday to report his presence at his father's house, in Montmeyan (Var) where he was arrested without resistance, according to concordant sources, then placed in police custody.

His lawyer did not wish to speak, requested by AFP on the sidelines of the debate on his imprisonment before a judge of freedoms and detention of the Paris judicial court, part of which was held behind closed doors.

“Voluntary homicide by spouse”, an aggravating circumstance

Arnaud B., a young man with very short hair, who presented himself in a black sweater and jeans, surrounded by three police officers in the box, will be imprisoned in the prison of La Santé, in Paris.

While in police custody, "he explained the facts and his escape," said a source close to the investigation, without giving further details.

The suspect had been transferred to Paris on Tuesday evening, where he was heard by investigators from the 2nd district of the Paris judicial police, in charge of the investigation.

At the end of his police custody, he was presented to an investigating judge who, according to the judicial source, indicted him for "intentional homicide by spouse, cohabitant or partner", an aggravating circumstance.

Victim's family demands justice

Arnaud B. had been wanted since January 28, the day of the discovery in his apartment in the 19th arrondissement of Paris of the body of his companion, Amanda Glain, 28, who died of strangulation, as revealed by the autopsy.

The body of the young woman had been discovered in the bathroom, by Parisian police officers who came to the home of the suspect, assigned to Blanc-Mesnil (Seine-Saint-Denis).

His colleagues had given the alert not seeing him when he took up duty.

Tuesday evening, in a press release to AFP, the family of Amanda Glain asked "for justice to be done for the inhuman act inflicted on the one who will forever remain their darling little girl and big sister".

She "welcomed" the success of the appeal for witnesses launched by the investigating judge who "finally made it possible to put an end to this unbearable run".

Administrative investigation

She however expressed the "regret that neither the investigators nor the public prosecutor of Paris proceeded to the immediate dissemination" of such a call, a "deficiency (which) fatally contributed to facilitating the escape of the perpetrator and thereby increase the suffering and fears of Amanda's loved ones".

The arrest was announced Tuesday morning by Interior Minister Gérald Darmanin via Twitter.

The car, the service weapon and the two chargers of Arnaud B. had been found on February 11 and 12 in Amiens in the parking lot of a fast food restaurant, after a call for witnesses launched on February 10.

"Shortly after the facts", according to a judicial source, the policeman had withdrawn 1,500 euros in Breteuil, in the Oise, a town located about a hundred kilometers from the capital.

On Saturday, a new call for witnesses had been broadcast with two new photos of the policeman to try to find him.

Placed in police custody for violence in 2019

At the same time, the Paris police prefect, Didier Lallement, requested an administrative investigation into possible shortcomings concerning the authorization to carry a weapon granted to the police officer.

He is known for domestic violence and his psychological fragility, according to a source familiar with the matter.

Arnaud B. had been placed in police custody in October 2019 for violence against his partner at the time and had received an alternative to prosecution, an awareness course on domestic violence.

Administratively, he had been sanctioned with a simple warning, the lowest disciplinary sanction in the public service, not recorded in the agent's file.
