Total back in Mozambique with a clear objective: to start production on its gas site by 2026.

At the end of March last year, a jihadist attack on the coastal city of Palma in the north of the country forced the French group

to suspend this

16.5 billion euro project.

Facilities still under construction on the Afungi peninsula had been emptied, personnel evacuated and a state of force majeure declared.

The province of Cabo Delgado is still plagued by violence, but according to Patrick Pouyanné, CEO of Total, “

a lot of progress has been made in a short time

”.

Only a few steps remain to be taken for lasting security in the region, he said.

He also announced a new agreement with the State.

At stake: funding for agricultural and education projects for local populations.

Present in Mozambique for thirty years, Total has also announced that it is expanding its presence by taking over the petrol distribution and logistics network of BP, another oil and gas giant.
