Turkey and Russia must withdraw from Libya "without delay" their mercenaries whose presence "threatens the stability and security of the country and the entire region," French President Emmanuel Macron said after an international conference on Libya in Paris.

"A first step was indeed taken with the announcement yesterday (...) of the withdrawal of 300 mercenaries" in the service of the camp of the strongman of the East Libyan Khalifa Haftar, underlined Macron during a press conference .

"But this is only the beginning: Turkey and Russia must also withdraw without delay their mercenaries and their military forces, whose presence threatens the stability and security of the country and the entire region."

Reluctance on the Turkish side

The conference endorsed "the Libyan plan for the departure of foreign forces and mercenaries".

Several thousand Russian mercenaries - from the private group Wagner -, pro-Turkish Syrians, Chadians and Sudanese are still present in Libya, according to the Elysee.

But Turkey shows itself in no hurry to initiate a withdrawal of its forces.

The Kremlin denies any sending of soldiers or mercenaries to Libya as well as any link with the Wagner group.

“There are a number of reservations on the Turkish side.

It's a good thing that we can see a first withdrawal, it will serve as an example.

Things have started, ”added German Chancellor Angela Merkel during this press conference held in Paris.
