The Americans started the 43rd edition of the Ryder Cup on a solid footing, winning three of the first four games (3-1) against the European title holders on Friday on the slightly windy course of Whistling Straits, Wisconsin.

The first point was however brought back to Europe by the impressive Jon Rahm / Sergio Garcia pair, victorious 3 & 1 of Justin Thomas / Jordan Spieth.

Garcia took the opportunity to equal the record of matches won in the event (23) so far only set by Nick Faldo.

On which, Dustin Johnson / Collin Morikawa quickly equalized by folding the affair 3 & 2 after a birdie on the N.16, at the expense of Paul Casey and Viktor Hovland.

The two other morning "foursomes" saw the United States continue this momentum.

Brilliantly first by the pair of rookies Patrick Cantlay / Xander Sc chaudele, who made their debut in the competition perfectly, dominating 5 & 3 the experienced Rory McIlroy and Ian Poulter.

"A start like this, I'm really glad we kept our cool and kept our feet on the ground," said Cantlay.

Brooks Koepka and Daniel Berger added the 3rd point of the break by beating 2 & 1 Lee Westwood and Matt Fitzpatrick.

In the wake of this first morning round, the "fourballs" were fought with again four points at stake.

Europe is trying to keep the trophy it won in France in 2018. It has won nine of the last twelve editions, including three of the last six on American soil.
