A cyclist was fatally hit by a train on Monday in the town of Gières, in Isère.

The 27-year-old man was struck down on a level crossing in the early morning, reports France 3 Auvergne Rhône-Alpes.

Alerted by witnesses, the emergency services went to the scene but could do nothing to save the victim.

According to

Le Dauphiné Libéré

, the cyclist was going to his place of work and entered the railway line connecting Grenoble to Chambéry while the security barriers were down.

The train struck him at an estimated speed of 120 km / h.

The trail of the accident

An investigation has been opened but the police strongly favor the thesis of the accident.

Officials believe the young man, who used to take this path, must have thought he had time to cross before the train passed.

A teenage girl who attended the drama would have confirmed this hypothesis, specifies the regional daily.
