T-Mobile is investigating a potential massive hacking of personal information by a group of computer hackers, who claim to have obtained the data of 100 million US customers of the operator and have put them for sale online, on the "dark web ", the hidden part of the internet.

"We are aware of these claims on an underground forum and are actively investigating to determine their veracity," a spokesperson for the group told AFP on Monday, adding that the group "had no further information to share. at this stage".

The attack would have made it possible to collect confidential data, such as tax identification numbers or driving licenses.

According to screenshots published by computer security site Bleeping Computer, the personal information of at least 30 million people has been offered for sale on dark web forums for the equivalent of 280,000 bitcoin.

The hack was first reported by the news site Motherboard (Vice), which cited a seller claiming to have "all consumer information" of T-Mobile customers.

Data theft and ransomware attacks have escalated in recent months, targeting various companies and organizations, including a US pipeline operator, the Irish health services IT system and a major Indian airline.

Facebook, Yahoo and Marriott have suffered theft of personal information concerning more than 100 million of their users or customers in recent years.
