The materials (+ 1.72%) and industrials (+ 1%) sectors benefited from the enthusiasm of investors.

Stocks in the energy sector also climbed (+ 1.48%), in the wake of higher oil prices and renewed confidence in demand for black gold.

The financial sector (+ 1%) also benefited from a slight rise in bond rates.

Yields on 10-year Treasuries rose to 1.3439% from 1.3237%.

The dollar settled at its highest for four months against the euro.
