The superhero film "The Suicide Squad" took to the top of the North American box office over the weekend, but with meager revenues estimated at $ 26.6 million, amid resurgent cases of Covid-19, according to provisional figures from the specialist firm Exhibitor Relations.
The film, sort of a sequel to 2016's hit “Suicide Squad,” once again stars Margot Robbie and Viola Davis, but two big names from the previous version - Will Smith and Jared Leto - are missing.
The film's simultaneous release on HBO Max has also hampered its theatrical entries, in a context where Hollywood is struggling to regain its pre-pandemic levels.
Last week's box office leader, Disney's family adventure film "Jungle Cruise," slipped to second place, with $ 15.7 million for the Friday-Sunday period, less than the half of his total for the previous week.
In third place is M. Night Shyamalan's psychological thriller "Old" ($ 4.1 million), followed by "Black Widow", a Disney Marvel production with Scarlett Johansson ($ 4 million), then "Stillwater" , the film based on the Amanda Knox affair, starring Matt Damon ($ 2.9 million).
Here is the rest of the top 10:
"The Green Knight" ($ 2.6 million)
"Space Jam: New Era" ($ 2.5 million)
"Snake Eyes" ($ 1.6 million)
"Escape Game 2: The World is a Trap" ($ 1.3 million)
"Fast and furious 9" ($ 1.2 million)
