This week, we take a look at American refrigerators through this question that torments us all, but why do Americans put eggs in the refrigerator?

Yes why ?

In France we can store eggs without putting them in the refrigerator, unlike in the United States.

This difference is explained by a very widespread food poisoning, salmonellosis.

It can be found on eggshells due to contamination with chicken droppings.

To prevent this, Americans wash eggs.

But in doing so they cut into the outer protective layer of the eggshell called the “cuticle”.

Without this protection against bacteria, eggs should be stored in the refrigerator.

In France, such washing is prohibited.

Instead, the hens are vaccinated against salmonella.

This is why, naturally protected by their shell which has remained intact, it is not necessary to put the eggs in the cold to preserve them.
