Thirteen were killed and two children were injured in a cable car crash in Italy

A cable car crash in the tourist resort of Stresa in the northern Italian province of Piedmont, on Sunday, left 13 people dead, according to a new, non-final toll from ambulance crews.

The ambulance service said on Twitter that "the number of victims has risen to 13," noting that a previous toll indicated nine deaths, and two children, aged nine and five, were injured and taken to hospital in critical condition.

The Stresa-Mutaroni cable car transports tourists and residents from the town of Stresa on Lake Maggiore, which rises nearly 1,400 meters above sea level, to the summit of Mount Mutarone in the Alps.

Simone Bobbio, spokesman for the rescue service in the Italian Alps in the Piedmont region, told Reuters that the cable car crashed as it was moving up the mountain, noting that there are still no details about the nationality or age of the victims.

Walter Milan, another spokesperson for the rescue service, told RAI News 24 television that two children had been taken by helicopter to a children's hospital in the nearby northern city of Turin.

He added that the cab of the cable car fell from a very high point and is now smashed in the woods below.
