Munich (dpa) - Munich Airport is closing one of its two runways for three months due to pending renovation work.

While the southern runway is being renewed from May 1st to July 31st, all flights are to take off and land on the northern runway.

The airport company announced on Monday.

Because of the corona pandemic, there have been far fewer flights at Munich Airport for a year, so that the closure of a runway does not cause any capacity problems.

In addition, the construction crews do not have to work at night.

"Since the work can take place during the day, the airport benefits from a significant reduction in costs and a shortening of the repair time," said the statement.

In the first quarter, only 14,000 aircraft took off or landed in Munich, 64,000 fewer than in the previous year.
