Wiesbaden (dpa / lhe) - The police in Hesse are also increasingly targeting speeders on the Europe-wide “Speedmarathon” traffic action day.

Today, between 6 a.m. and 10 p.m., more than 500 police officers and municipal employees will check the speed of road users at more than 200 measuring points.

The police headquarters have announced the locations of the speed cameras in advance.

In other federal states such as Bavaria and Baden-Württemberg, there should be more speed controls.

Last year, the Blitzmarathon was canceled due to corona.

During the speed camera campaign in 2019, around 12 150 speed offenders were caught in Hessen.

"Speed violations are not trivial offenses, they are mostly committed consciously and calculated by those affected," said the police.

The "speed marathon" is intended to draw attention to the consequences.

It is organized by the Europe-wide police network “European Roads Policing Network” (Roadpol), which aims to reduce the number of accident victims.

According to the police, 22,614 people died in road accidents on the streets of Hesse in 2020, 3831 of them seriously.

205 people were killed.

Driving too fast is said to be the main cause of the accident, and in connection with the day of action, the police speak of “killer no. 1” in road traffic.

In 2020, in half of those killed, inappropriate or excessive speed contributed to the accident, and in more than every fourth accident with seriously injured persons.
