Italy is abolishing speed camera photos to protect privacy. Drivers and motorcyclists who were driving too fast should only have a fine notice delivered to their home.

Evidence photos from automatic cameras, which also show faces, remain with the authorities. They should only be used if speeders object. Then third parties must be made unrecognizable in the images. The regulation also applies to foreign holidaymakers who were caught on Italian roads. Italy has more than 11,000 speed cameras - more than any other European country.
